Diabetes prevention: Burotop staff receives awareness training

Must read

This commitment was demonstrated through an interactive session with Burotop staff during a workshop aimed at clarifying how diabetes develops, recognizing and understanding warning signs, and learning practical prevention measures.

This awareness is the first remedy against the disease. “When discussing diabetes, the warning signs to watch for are excessive thirst, constant hunger, weight loss, unexplained fatigue, blurred vision, slow healing, and frequent infections,” while presenting family history, factors like overweight and obesity, physical inactivity, high cholesterol, smoking, and excessive alcohol consumption as risk factors.

Poorly controlled diabetes indeed has several consequences, including, among others, vision loss, blindness, cardiovascular complications like heart attack and stroke, kidney failure, and urinary infections.

Regarding prevention, emphasis was placed on a balanced diet favoring fruits, vegetables, fiber, and lean proteins. Practicing regular physical activity for at least 30 minutes per day, in line with World Health Organization recommendations. “It is necessary to avoid excessive consumption of sugar and saturated fats, maintain a healthy weight (BMI between 18 and 24.9), reduce stress, sleep well, and get regular screenings, especially in the presence of risk factors,” was stressed.

“It was a very informative session because we needed to better understand the risks related to diabetes in the workplace. We are considering how to implement everything we learned at Burotop by establishing practices that can help find solutions, for example, by initiating ‘zero sugar’ days and sports days with staff to combat diabetes,” highlighted a Burotop representative.
