The creation of a production hub on the continent was proposed by African leaders to facilitate equitable vaccine access for all, especially for the most disadvantaged in Africa. It was noted that excessive centralization of vaccine production capacity is incompatible with equitable access in a crisis. Regional production centers, supported by open supply chains, should strengthen preparedness for a future health crisis.
Leaders advocated for vaccine production in Africa to help the continent overcome the current health crisis, which has worsened socio-economic effects on the African population. They also called for equitable vaccine distribution, stating that the entire world will not be safe until all regions of the world are vaccinated fairly.
