The Future of Energy: How Congo is Becoming a Green Hydrogen Leader in Central Africa

Must read

The Republic of Congo has announced the launch of a pilot project for green hydrogen production, based on the hydroelectric capacities of the Cuvette region. Developed by the National Laboratory for Renewable Energies with support from the Ministry of Scientific Research, this project will be the first full-cycle enterprise in Central Africa—from water electrolysis to refueling stations for transport.

The initiative involves the installation of 10 MW capacity electrolyzers, utilizing surplus energy from local hydroelectric plants during the rainy seasons. The produced hydrogen will be allocated for public transport in Brazzaville and for powering remote industrial sites.

The project has already attracted the attention of international partners: the European Investment Bank has stated its readiness to explore financing part of the infrastructure, and the German company Siemens Energy has offered technological support. According to experts, by 2030, Congo could produce up to 50,000 tons of green hydrogen per year, creating a new export product for the European market.

“This is a breakthrough not only in energy, but also in economics,” stated the Energy Minister. We are transforming our natural advantages into tomorrow’s technologies.
