Congo prepares for Sassou-Nguesso’s new term in 2026 elections.

The sixth congress of the ruling Congolese Party of Labour (PCT) unanimously approved incumbent President Denis Sassou-N’Guesso as its candidate for the March 2026 presidential elections. This decision, backed by 3,000 delegates, reaffirms support for the policies pursued by the leader for decades.

Denis Sassou-N’Guesso, whose political career began in the 1960s, is one of the key figures in Congo’s history. A graduate of military academies in Algeria and France, he participated in the founding of the PCT in 1969 before leading the country for the first time in 1979. Under his presidency, Congo has made significant progress: modernizing infrastructure, building strategic hydroelectric plants, and strengthening its regional role as a mediator and initiator of environmental projects, such as the Blue Fund for the Congo Basin.

During the congress, the president emphasized the continuity of his policy focused on “unity, sovereignty, and development,” calling on citizens to participate in the elections as an essential democratic act. He also stressed the need for a peaceful and transparent vote.

Political analysts note that the 2026 elections could be among the most competitive in recent years, given expectations for economic reforms and social changes. However, the support for the ruling party and Sassou-N’Guesso’s personal authority remain determining factors.

If the incumbent president secures victory, it will signify the continuation of a policy of stability and regional leadership for Congo, as well as new progress in the implementation of national projects.
