In Congo-Brazzaville, the 3,000 participants of the sixth congress of the ruling Congolese Party of Labour (PCT) nominated President Denis Sassou Nguesso, 82, with over 40 cumulative years in power, as their candidate for the presidential election scheduled for March 2026 on the evening of December 30.

Denis Sassou Nguesso was unsurprisingly designated as the ruling Congolese Party of Labour’s (PCT) candidate for the upcoming March presidential election by unanimous vote. This choice was welcomed by one congress attendee. “Today, he is a candidate who has unanimous support in Congo. He is the guarantor of peace in Congo. Apart from Sassou Nguesso, we no longer see anyone else who can lead Congo, because President Denis Sassou Nguesso, since he has been here, has brought a climate of stability to Congo, a climate of peace,” they explained.

Furthermore, the congress was unable to reach a consensus on appointing a new secretary-general for the party, nor on the names of members to form the political bureau and the central committee. The congress officially concludes this Wednesday, December 31.
