In a context of strengthening international relations, Djibouti and Japan are intensifying their bilateral cooperation through an in-depth institutional dialogue. On January 7, 2026, the President of the Djiboutian National Assembly received a delegation from Japan to consolidate prospects for peace, stability, and development for the benefit of both nations. The parliamentarians discussed ways to promote mutual understanding, deepen expertise exchanges, and strengthen cooperation mechanisms between the two Parliaments.

The meeting was also an opportunity to review the official mission to Japan in June 2025, which had already laid the groundwork for enhanced legislative dialogue. Japanese cooperation aims to support sustainable development projects in Djibouti, while consolidating Japan’s strategic presence in the region, notably through the establishment of a Japanese military base on Djiboutian soil, one of the few in Africa.

This partnership is all the more strategic as trade exchanges between Tokyo and Djibouti, although modest, reflect a growing economic relationship, with Japanese exports to Djibouti estimated at over $62 million in 2024 according to official data. A significant step forward for a bilateral partnership gaining depth, encompassing parliamentary diplomacy, economic exchanges, and concrete development projects.
