The South African supermarket chain Shoprite has announced its decision to leave Uganda by the end of the year. The six stores located in Acacia Mall, Village Mall, Victoria Mall, Lugogo Mall, Clock Tower, and Arena Mall, operated by Shoprite, will be taken over by Carrefour, owned by the French multinational retailer. This takeover will strengthen Carrefour’s regional presence. The franchise is owned by the Dubai-based multinational, Majid Al Futtaim. In accordance with the lease transfer agreement, the stores and movable assets of Shoprite Checkers Uganda Limited will be taken over by Carrefour.

In a statement, it was indicated that the company is seizing the opportunity in Uganda to offer more customers across the country Carrefour’s value proposition, product range, and international standards. The agreement also reflects the growing interest in investments in the East Africa region, offering opportunities for local employment and career development. Majid Al Futtaim already operates two stores under the Carrefour brand in Uganda. With the takeover of Shoprite, its number of stores will rise to eight.

Shoprite had previously closed its stores in Kenya. Its departure from Uganda, following the closure in Kenya, is part of its strategy to reduce its operations outside of South Africa.
