Kenya was the largest market for Uganda’s milk exports. However, for the past three years, milk exports have faced difficulties after Kenyan authorities seized at least 3,000 bags of powdered milk and packages of Lato Milk, claiming Uganda had smuggled these products into the country without paying taxes. The impasse has remained unresolved since then, causing milk prices to plummet and affecting hundreds of people in the trade. Milk prices collapsed from 750 shillings per liter to 250 shillings per liter.

To the great relief of Ugandan milk processors, the Zambian market has opened up to Ugandan milk. Addressing milk processors, the Minister of Agriculture, Animal Industry, and Fisheries called for quality testing of Ugandan milk before closing their markets, as the country adheres to international standards and its products are ISO certified. He added that unnecessary trade wars without proof are a hindrance to development in the region.

According to statistics from the Dairy Development Authority, milk production in Uganda increased from 2.5 billion liters in 2018 to 2.8 billion liters in 2020. Dairy exports exceeded 341 billion shillings over the past four years.
