The National Assembly of the DRC has a new president in Aimé Boji Sangara. He secured the support of 413 out of 423 present deputies, replacing his mentor Vital Kamerhe, who resigned in September ahead of a vote to oust him.
Hailing from South Kivu in eastern DRC, the 57-year-old Sangara has spent nearly 20 years in politics. He represented the Walungu territory from 2006 to 2019 and was re-elected in 2023. He holds a Master’s degree in Development Economics from the University of Oxford. He has held several ministerial positions, including Minister of Foreign Trade, Minister of Budget, and, most recently, Minister of Industry.
A member of the Union for the Congolese Nation, his multiple appointments to the government have raised questions about where his loyalties lie: with his own party or with President Félix Tshisekedi and the ruling coalition, the Sacred Union of the Nation.
