He first gained fame through his impersonations of the public prosecutor and his punchlines that went viral on social media. Today, Ange Boueya 1st, a Congolese comedian, is no longer content with just making people laugh: he is also advocating for a place for comedy within the African cultural industry. Portrait of an artist who wants to professionalize laughter.
The Congolese comedian Ange Boueya 1st has been making headlines on social media for several months. His sketches blend satire, caricature, and legal comedy in a unique style. He frequently uses Lingala phrases like « oyali mabeeeee » – you are bad – or « loi ekolakisa yo », meaning the law will strike you down, which have become emblematic of his performances.
“I am very happy to be on Africa24, thank you, but boyali mabé. So, my beginnings were very impressive because, like all beginnings, you start from the bottom. These are shows we sometimes put on in an improvised manner in schools, in small school competitions where they write at the end of the school year that you are the comedians chosen to make others and the parents, who will come to attend the school competition, laugh. So, that’s how it was, and then finally we started to grow after the Baccalaureate exam. We arrived in Brazzaville, we joined Brazza comedy show, the French institute, took comedy training, and today, by the grace of God, it’s going well.”
This former law student advocates for the creation of an African comedy industry where young talents can express themselves and make a living from their art. On October 4th, 2025, he took the temperature of his “courtroom of laughter” in front of over 1,500 spectators at the Palais des Congrès in Brazzaville during a unique show. A success that now gives him continental ambitions, with an African tour in preparation.
“There are many upcoming projects because, as an artist, I have already launched my production company, Premier Prod, which even co-produced the show with Pemba Mabika at the Palais des Congrès. I would like to see that company grow. And then, the project is also to take the ‘Courtroom of Laughter’ on an African tour. That is to say, the ‘Courtroom of Laughter’ will be a court that lands everywhere. Because in Africa, we face problems, we have issues plaguing society, and we want through laughter, which is this powerful weapon, to be able to denounce, raise awareness, and above all, do good for the population.”
Between cultural engagement and legal humor, Ange Boueya 1st is establishing himself as one of the most creative faces of the new Congolese comedy scene. With his “courtroom of laughter,” he hopes to plead the case for an authentic African sense of humor, one that is exportable and recognized beyond the borders of Congo.
