The 6th Ordinary Congress of the Congolese Party of Labour (PCT), the main political formation of the presidential majority, opened on December 27, 2025, before approximately 3,000 participants and in the presence of representatives from allied parties and the opposition. The party’s Secretary-General, Pierre Moussa, called on President Denis Sassou-Nguesso to present his candidacy for the presidential election scheduled for March 22, 2026.

The 6th Ordinary Congress of the Congolese Party of Labour (PCT), the main party of the presidential majority, is taking place in Brazzaville from December 27 to 30, 2025. This meeting aims to renew the party’s leadership bodies and also serves as a major political platform ahead of the presidential election scheduled for March 22, 2026. The PCT’s Secretary-General, Pierre Moussa, solemnly called on the Head of State, Denis Sassou Nguesso, to seek a new term. In a similar move, the Congolese Movement for Democracy and Integral Development (MCDDI) has also invited the President of the Republic to declare his candidacy for the upcoming presidential election.

“The Congolese Party of Labour, following President Denis Sassou Nguesso, has presented his candidacy for the next presidential election.”

In a speech delivered before a large and diverse assembly, the party’s Secretary-General, Pierre Moussa, revealed the profound rationale behind Denis Sassou Nguesso’s new candidacy. Addressing 3,000 galvanized congress members, Pierre Moussa meticulously outlined the reasons that, in his and the ruling party’s view, make this renewed candidacy not only legitimate but necessary. He emphasized the imperative of “continuity and consolidation of achievements,” citing major infrastructure projects, progress in macroeconomic stability, and the relentless pursuit of peace and national cohesion.

“We are moving forward with the utmost energy, with the choice falling on President Denis Sassou Nguesso as the MCDDI’s candidate for the presidential election. Congo, our country, needs a leader endowed with vast experience and a proven record of peace at the helm of our institutions to continue the march toward development.”

With three months to go before the presidential election in Congo, the political landscape remains subdued: official declarations of candidacy are rare. This caution is notable, especially as party congresses are in full swing, typically the venues for candidate nominations. This telling silence is expected to end soon, as these partisan gatherings will likely serve as a springboard for a flurry of anticipated candidacies, changing the dynamics and launching the electoral campaign.
