Open Days to Bring Social Services Closer to Congolese People

Must read

From November 13 to 17, 2023, the Social Work Institute of Brazzaville hosted an unprecedented event: the first edition of the Open Doors Days on Social Action. Organized by the Ministry of Social Affairs, Solidarity, and Humanitarian Action, these days aimed to introduce the general public to the range of benefits and services provided by the state in the field of social protection.

A Bridge Between the Government and the Citizens

The primary goal of this initiative was clear: to promote the services implemented by the government and to establish a close connection with the public, beneficiaries, and technical and financial partners. As explained by the Minister of Social Affairs, Marie-Cécile Mboukou-Kimbatsa, during the official launch, visitors were able to meet directly with social action professionals to gain insight, particularly into the various careers within the sector, a way to inspire vocations.

These open house days were launched by Minister of State Pierre Mabiala, representing the Prime Minister, underscoring the importance given to this event at the highest level of the state.

Tangible achievements showcased to the public

The highlight of these open house days was the exhibition and sale of various products made by beneficiaries of the Telema and Lisungi projects. These two flagship programs of Congolese social action have enabled thousands of vulnerable people to develop income-generating activities. Visitors were able to discover and purchase locally made products, directly supporting the social economy.

Presentations were also made on the achievements of the Telema, Lisungi, and PARFTS projects. The National Social Safety Nets Program, set to launch in 2024 with the goal of covering 65,000 vulnerable households in its first phase, was detailed. The post-flood recovery support project, named “Tombwama,” was also presented to the public.

An International Partnership Serving the Social Good

These days also highlighted the partnership between Congo and France. The French Ambassador, Claire Bodonyi, present at the event, detailed the main areas of cooperation: strengthening the administrative, human, and organizational framework of a sustainable social safety net mechanism; supporting social governance and enhancing the ministry’s capacities; backing the reform of social work training; and supporting civil society initiatives.

The Telema project indeed benefits from the financial and technical support of France through the French Development Agency (AFD) and Expertise France.

Sharing experiences among beneficiaries

Beyond the exhibitions and official presentations, these open days facilitated a valuable exchange of experiences among beneficiaries of various social programs. These interactions fostered mutual inspiration and allowed participants to learn from each other’s successes and challenges.

A First Edition Set to Become a Tradition

Following the success of this initial trial, deemed conclusive, the Minister of Social Affairs expressed the wish to see these open-door days become a permanent fixture, in order to further strengthen the connection between the various stakeholders in social action in Congo, including partners, beneficiaries, and the general population.

This initiative aligns with President Denis Sassou-Nguesso’s vision, which has made social protection a pillar of national development. By enabling citizens to better understand their rights and the services available to them, these open days enhance the transparency and effectiveness of social action, while bringing the administration closer to the people. An approach that places people at the heart of public policies.
