Niger’s President Mohamed Bazoum arrived yesterday in the Chadian capital N’Djamena to attend the funeral of the late Chadian President Idriss Déby. Déby died after sustaining injuries on the front line against rebels. The funeral ceremony for the late Chadian president is taking place today (April 23) at the Nation Square in the capital.
The procession will then proceed to the Grand Mosque of N’Djamena before the remains are transported to the city of Amdjarass for burial. Alpha Condé, the Head of State of Guinea, has already arrived in the capital for the funeral. Mali’s interim president, Bah Ndaw, is also present in N’Djamena. Other heads of state are expected to attend the funeral.
The late President Déby had been in power for 30 years. Analysts indicate that his death could create a period of uncertainty for Chad. Reports from the Central African country indicate the internal situation is extremely complex. Chad has become a major player in the fight against armed groups and jihadist movements. The country is heavily involved in the Lake Chad Basin crisis. Chad also plays a central role in the Sahel in securing the so-called “three borders” area.
In a significant development yesterday, Mahamat Idriss Déby, the son of Idriss Déby, was appointed interim president by a transitional council of military officers. This transition aims to ensure the country’s stability during this period. The international community is closely monitoring developments in the region.
