The competition launched by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to promote the talent of players in local leagues has been permanently removed from CAF’s competition schedule to make way for the Nations League.
The CAF President confirmed the news on January 17 in Rabat during a press conference.
“Our job is to make decisions in the best interest of African football, like the AFCON every four years […] With the African Nations League every year, there will no longer be a need for CHAN,” he stated.
CHAN ends after eight editions. Morocco remains the most successful nation with three titles, followed by DR Congo with two. Its final edition was held in East Africa (Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda).
The Nations League, a new format, will feature matches within geographical zones during FIFA windows, followed by a final phase with the winners from each zone. The annual tournament will involve all 54 member associations.
According to the CAF President, this reform aims to deliver world-class competitions, better integrated into the international calendar and economically viable, while enhancing the visibility and competitiveness of African football.
