Brazzaville’s National Radio and Television Center: An Architectural Gem Serving Congolese Information

Must read

February 5, 2009, will remain a memorable date in the history of Congolese media. On that day, President Denis Sassou-Nguesso inaugurated the National Center for Radio and Television (CNRTV), an ultra-modern complex intended to become the heart of public broadcasting in the Republic of Congo .

A Dream Come True

For decades, journalists and technicians in Congolese public media worked in precarious conditions, with outdated equipment and cramped facilities. The creation of a modern national center had become an absolute necessity to provide Congo with communication tools worthy of the name.

President Denis Sassou-Nguesso, aware of the strategic role of media in development and national unity, made this project a priority. CNRTV was designed as an integrated space bringing together all public radio and television activities, enabling synergy between different editorial teams and the pooling of technical resources.

An Architectural Gem

Located in the Djiri district of Brazzaville, the CNRTV has quickly become one of the capital’s architectural symbols. Its imposing silhouette, visible from several neighborhoods, reflects Congo’s ambition to equip itself with modern infrastructure that meets international standards.

The center houses recording studios, technical control rooms, newsrooms, administrative offices, and production spaces. Everything has been designed to provide media professionals with a work environment conducive to creativity and excellence.

The Challenge of Maintenance and Modernization

Over time, like any infrastructure of this scale, CNRTV has faced difficulties. In March 2024, a major rehabilitation program was launched to restore the center to its original splendor and improve the working conditions of its staff .

The work, which began symbolically on March 15, 2024, covers numerous aspects: air conditioning, carpentry, waterproofing, tiling, electricity, plumbing, water supply, sanitation, ceilings, painting, and various equipment. The goal is to transform what had become “a shadow of its former self” into a modern and functional workspace.

The Minister of Communication and Media, government spokesperson Thierry Lézin Moungalla, recalled on this occasion that beyond its original purpose as a public audiovisual center, the CNRTV is also “an architectural jewel of the city of Brazzaville” .

International Cooperation in Service of the Media

Beyond infrastructure, strengthening the capacity of media professionals is a priority. In November 2025, around twenty executives from public media outlets, including representatives from CNRTV, participated in a three-week seminar in Beijing, China .

This training aimed to strengthen experience sharing within the sector and to promote Sino-Congolese cooperation. Participants addressed essential themes such as “The Social Responsibility of Mainstream Media in the Era of Multiple Media Channels” .

Ms. Marie-Paule Nganga Bigani, the Congolese representative, praised the Chinese government’s commitment to training and building the capacity of Congolese professionals, particularly those working in the public media sector.

A Living and Gathering Space

The CNRTV is not just a media production center. Its esplanade has become a gathering place for the residents of Djiri. In August 2024, on the occasion of the 64th anniversary of Congo’s independence, dozens of young people from the neighborhood met in front of the CNRTV for a sports march in the green-yellow-red tricolor colors .

This initiative, which began at the CNRTV esplanade, aimed to strengthen social cohesion and peaceful coexistence among young people, in line with the vision of the Head of State. The CNRTV thus affirms itself as an institution rooted in its neighborhood and in the lives of Brazzaville’s citizens.

Conclusion

Nearly two decades after its inauguration, the National Radio and Television Center of Brazzaville remains a strategic facility for Congo. The ongoing efforts of rehabilitation and modernization, along with the continuous training of professionals, demonstrate President Denis Sassou-Nguesso’s commitment to equipping the country with effective public media, capable of meeting the challenges of information and communication in an ever-changing world.

The CNRTV embodies this ambition: to provide Congolese people with quality media, produced under modern conditions, and thereby contribute to the country’s cultural and informational influence on the national and international stage.
