STATEMENT ON THE OCTOBER 12, 2025 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION.
On October 12, Cameroonian voters turned out in large numbers to exercise their fundamental civic right by electing a President of the Republic for the country. I commend them for this.
Reports reaching us through various public communication channels indicate that since then, tensions have been dangerously rising in the country due to public concerns regarding various reprehensible acts and behaviors by certain individuals during this election, which are likely to compromise its final outcome.
Cameroonians are already suffering severely from rampant poverty, the devastation of the armed conflict in the North-West and South-West regions, and the indiscriminate killings by the Boko Haram sect, particularly in the Far North region. Our country cannot afford new violent confrontations among Cameroonians following this presidential election, in which voters expressed their will massively and, undoubtedly, clearly.
Therefore, to spare Cameroon from new tragedies, confrontations, and divisions that could affect it for a long time, it is imperative that the official results correspond to the choice expressed by Cameroonian voters in the ballot boxes. In other words, the verdict of the ballot box must be respected.
Those in charge of maintaining public order must exercise discernment and the utmost restraint, and refrain from treating citizens who have expressed their choice through peaceful means and refuse to be cheated as criminals. Those who threaten public order are those who seek to alter the will expressed at the polls, not the other way around.
Cameroon is our common nation. It is our only nation. It will outlive us all. We do not have the right to sink it further into the basement of the history of nations by destroying, in seven-year cycles, its chances for development, shared progress, and international influence.
