Rwanda has been selected to host the 2025 UCI Road World Championships, becoming the first African nation to organize this event. The Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), the world governing body of cycling, confirmed the selection. The decision was announced following the 190th UCI Congress in Belgium.
Confirming the news, the UCI President stated that Kigali, the Rwandan capital, will provide a magnificent setting for the event’s first appearance on African soil. Cycling is very popular in Rwanda, with a number of riders competing in European events. Morocco had also bid to host the championships.
The UCI President defended the decision to grant this opportunity to Rwanda, emphasizing that “sport and politics cannot be mixed.”
