The U.S. government has contributed $9.5 million through USAID (United States Agency for International Development) to the World Food Programme (WFP) to support Malawi in its fight against hunger.

The funds will be used to provide emergency assistance to vulnerable households in Malawi, support community livelihoods, and strengthen the capacity of national and local institutions to address issues of food security, disaster risk management, and emergency response.

The goal of U.S. assistance through WFP is to support efforts to increase food security and better manage seasonal shocks such as drought and floods in Malawi. The aim is to help families and individuals produce and purchase reliable, quality food. It strives to strengthen the resilience of vulnerable communities to climate shocks and improve their food security. The contribution will be used to provide cash and/or food transfers to 42,000 refugees hosted at Dzaleka Camp. Furthermore, it will also be used to build capacity and transfer skills to national and local institutions involved in food security, nutrition, disaster risk management, and emergency response.

USAID has been actively involved in supporting WFP in Malawi since 2017.
