African Union Intensifies Mediation Efforts Amid Congo Crisis

Must read

In Lomé, Togo, the African Union brings together African leaders to revive the peace process in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Facing years of conflict in the east of the country, this meeting aims to coordinate mediation efforts, halt the fighting, and secure the entire Great Lakes region.

Lomé, the Togolese capital, hosted African leaders on January 17 for decisive talks on the crisis in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The goal: to promote the implementation of the peace agreement recently signed in Washington between the DRC and Rwanda. This high-level meeting is taking place under the mediation of Togolese President Faure Gnassingbé, appointed by the African Union. Ahead of these discussions, the head of state traveled to Kinshasa to pave the way and reaffirm Togo’s commitment to finding a lasting peace.

During our work, we must demonstrate our ability to coordinate our efforts, assume our responsibilities, and maintain a common framework, even in a fragile regional environment and an increasingly fragile world. The challenge is simple, yet demanding. Lomé must not be a conference of minor importance.

The African Union Commission, along with the facilitators, we are here today in Lomé for a high-level meeting with the mediator to intensify the Union’s efforts for a cessation of hostilities, first and foremost, in eastern DRC.

For several years, eastern DRC has been marked by a persistent security crisis, fueled by armed groups and regional tensions. This instability weakens the entire Great Lakes region.

This summit calls for a necessity to centralize mediation initiatives with a clear work plan for all mediation processes. Therefore, Lomé becomes the center for finding solutions to this security crisis, to bring in the African Union with its various instruments.

Beyond declarations, Lomé is positioning itself as a key hub for peace in Africa. The decisions made here could weigh on the future of the DRC and the entire Great Lakes region.
