Ouesso General Hospital: A Medical Lifeline for Northern Congo

Must read

OUESSO. Lost in the heart of the equatorial forest, nearly 800 kilometers from Brazzaville, the city of Ouesso long suffered from a concerning medical isolation. For a specialized consultation or a surgical operation, the inhabitants of Sangha had to undertake an arduous journey of several days to the capital. Many gave up. Some died along the way.

This era is coming to an end. The inauguration of the Ouesso General Hospital marked a decisive turning point for the entire region. This modern facility, equipped with state-of-the-art technology and qualified personnel, has become the primary medical referral center for the northern departments.

The hospital provides surgery, internal medicine, pediatrics, and gynecology-obstetrics services, as well as a laboratory and a medical imaging department. The emergency room operates 24/7. For the first time, the populations in the north have access to quality healthcare without having to leave their region.

“Before, when a loved one fell ill, it was a nightmare,” says a resident of Ouesso. “We had to find money for the trip, for accommodation in Brazzaville, for the treatment. Many sick people preferred to stay home and wait. Now, we have a proper hospital. People come from all over the department.”

The impact is also measured in economic terms. Families no longer have to bear the exorbitant costs of medical travel to the capital. Sick merchants are treated quickly and resume their activities sooner. The presence of doctors and nurses attracts other services and helps to stimulate the local economy.

This hospital is not an isolated case. It is part of a vast network of new healthcare infrastructure deployed across the entire territory: the Édith Lucie Bongo Ondimba Hospital in Oyé, the Djiri Hospital in Brazzaville, the Ngoyo Central Hospital in Pointe-Noire, the Sibiti Hospital in the Lékoumou department. Each of these facilities addresses a specific need and brings healthcare closer to the people.

The construction of the Ouesso General Hospital exemplifies the public health policy championed by President Denis Sassou-Nguesso, who has made equitable access to healthcare a national priority. By equipping each region with modern infrastructure, he is reducing territorial inequalities and offering every Congolese citizen, wherever they live, the opportunity to receive proper medical treatment.
