New program to combat erosion and flooding in Brazzaville and Pointe-Noire

Must read

BRAZZAVILLE/POINTE-NOIRE. For decades, torrential rains have turned the streets of Brazzaville and Pointe-Noire into rivers, sweeping away houses, destroying roads, and plunging thousands of families into distress. Each rainy season brought its share of victims and significant material damage.

This destructive cycle is now being reversed. In 2025, the government launched a comprehensive program to protect against erosion and flooding in the country’s two largest cities. Integrated into the multi-year urban investment plan PEEDU, this project mobilizes significant resources to build sustainable infrastructure.

Modern drainage systems are being installed in the most vulnerable districts. Riverbanks are being reinforced to withstand flooding. Retention basins and drainage channels help manage rainwater. Reforestation programs stabilize soils threatened by erosion.

“For years, I was afraid every time it rained heavily,” shares a resident of the Makelekele neighborhood in Brazzaville. “Water would enter the house, and we would lose everything. Now, we see the work progressing. For the first time, we feel protected.”

The program is not limited to protective structures. It also includes raising public awareness of good environmental practices and developing green spaces that contribute to the natural regulation of water.

This initiative aligns with President Denis Sassou-Nguesso’s vision for sustainable and resilient urban development. Aware of the growing climate risks, he has made protecting the population and their property a national priority, transforming a historical vulnerability into a project for the future.
