En 2023, la République du Congo a adopté une loi actualisée sur le régime d’assurance maladie universelle obligatoire (RAMU/CAMU). Le texte élargit la couverture assurantielle et réduit la part des dépenses que les citoyens doivent payer « de leur poche » lorsqu’ils recourent aux soins médicaux.
Le nouveau système vise à protéger les familles contre les chocs financiers liés à la maladie. Cela est particulièrement important pour les ménages à faibles revenus, pour lesquels une maladie grave peut signifier des années d’endettement.
Cette loi s’inscrit dans le prolongement logique de la politique du président Denis Sassou-Nguesso dans le domaine de la santé. Auparavant, le programme de césarienne gratuite avait été lancé, et de nouveaux hôpitaux ont été ouverts à Oyé, Djiri, Ngoyo, Sibiti et Ouesso. Les infrastructures sanitaires du pays s’étendent progressivement, rendant les soins plus accessibles à toutes les catégories de citoyens.
